Not very often does a debut track go quickly to Number One on the Billboard’s Hot 100, quickly sell more than a million units and become the Number One single of the year. The Knack pulled that off in the summer of ’79. I remember hearing it once, and then not being able to get away from it for the rest of the year.
Sharona was a 17-year-old groupie who singer Doug Fieger quickly fell in love with. Being 25 at the time didn’t stop him from initiating a four-year romance. He was so filled with emotion that he is said to have written the song in fifteen minutes. That’s Sharona on the cover art. She’s now a real estate agent in California and owns the rights to mysharon.com.
The Knack had a few other minor hits and launched a slight comeback in the early ‘90s. In 194, “My Sharona” was back on the charts after appearing in Reality Bites. Fieger died in 2010, leaving us one of the catchiest debuts of all time.
