"Mr. Jaws" by Dickie Goodman

Dickie Goodman was the King of the Spoofers with a career going back to the ‘50s. It’s been said that he pioneered the “break-in record” that used snippets from popular songs of the day surrounded by a mock interview. I first heard his act in “Energy Crisis ‘74” and really noticed “Mr. President”, which kicked off a long list of “Mr.” records.

It was 1975 and a movie had America whipped into a shark frenzy. I even remember special shark decals on a Chevy Nova in the neighborhood. Dickie joined the bandwagon (or would that be boat) and spliced together “Mr. Jaws” I say “spliced” because that’s what you did before the mid to late nineties, you physically spliced sections of tape together using a razor blade and some sticky tape.

Thirteen songs were used to tell the story of Mr. Jaws, from the “Jaws Theme” to disco hits of the day from Bazuka, KC and the Sunshine Band, Van McCoy and The Bee Gees to even Glen Campbell. I recall listening to WLS on my friend Todd’s “Modular Stereo”, laughing until the grape Kool-Aid squirted out of our noses. To this day, I wonder if actual water was used at the end of the record when the interview is being pulled under by Mr. Jaws.
