What’s up with a song called “What’s Up” that, instead of using “What’s Up” in the lyrics, says, “What’s going on”? Many sources point out that there was this song by Marvin Gaye called “What’s Going On” that might cause confusion. None of this affected the popularity of the 4 Non Blondes song. It peaked in the Top 15 in the US and went to the top of the charts in Ireland and Germany.

The first time I heard the song, I was startled by Linda Perry’s voice when she jumped into the chorus. Her strained quickly voice grew on me. The nose ring, top hart and long shirt-skirt made her a perfect female Axl-Slash hybrid with a touch of Lisa Bonet thrown in.

Linda Perry is now a hot-shot record producer and acclaimed songwriter. The Number Ones she penned include Pink’s “Get the Party Started” and Xtina’s “Beautiful”. I’m not sure this blog ever answered the question “What’s Up”, but I think we learned what’s going on with the song’s singer.
