"Rocket" by Def Leppard

Def Leppard became quite the name droppers in this Hysteria track. The first reference to stand out: “Rocket Man” by Elton John. There’s also a nod to “Bennie and the Jets”. Sir Paul, with and without the Beatles, received several mentions. Chuck Berry and Queen were recognized for “Johnny B. Goode” and “Killer Queen” respectively.

The two-and-a-half minute shorter video reveals the groups love for all that is glam. A quick cut to guitarist Phil Collen all Ziggy-Stardusted-out pays tribute to Bowie. Then there are speedy flashes of Mott the Hoople, T-Rex and Sweet and the TV screens, still pictures and black-and-white performance videos. This is truly a late-eighties homage to guys that wore make up.

By today’s standards, Mercury Records milked this album. It was the seventh and final US single. Sadly, it was the last to feature Guitarist Steve Clark. Producer “Mutt” Lange used samples and really dialed in Rick Allen’s one-armed electronic drum kit to give us a true glimpse of early-nineties Hard Rock production which lasted until hair bands either converted to flannel wear or sat out most of the decade. Eventually, Def Leppard would attempt (and fail) to “Grunge-it”!
