"Dixie Cream Donuts"

Before we had it in Rockford there was much excitement whenever someone would get their hands on some Krispy Kreme donuts (much akin to Coors Beer in Smokey and the Bandit). For a time, the only way to take delivery was to buy from a charity sale. At one point a diabetes support group was a beneficiary, but I digress. Way before K.K., Rockford had Dixie Cream donuts.

Thought to be a knock-off, the D.C. brand was actually founded 8 years before Krispy Kreme and they had a shop right across from Colonial Village on Center Court. When I was on an adventure with Dad, we would often stop for a glazed. He would have a coffee and for me it would be a glass of that magical cherry drink on display in the glass dispenser. Oh how frosty cold it was, and I always secretly wanted a refill.

Today there’s one lone Dixie Crème donut show in Jenks, Oklahoma. Franchises are available. I though about looking into it (along with Lums, Shakey’s...etc). It just wouldn’t be the same serving a glazed or Long John with a latte or Chai tea.
